Pictures of Peterborough

Peterborough is a cathedral city sitting on the border between the East of England and the East Midlands, with Rutland and Northamptonshire to the west, Cambridgeshire to the south and Lincolnshire to the North. Its proximity to the A1 and Eastern Coast rail line give it excellent links to London, Cambridge and Leicester. The city and cathedral date back to the Normans but the population has expanded in the 1960s and is now a large cosmopolitan conurbation. The two main hospitals are based in the city. The District hospital site dates back to the 1960s and is soon closing and both hospitals are moving to the Edith Cavell Hospital site.

House prices within the city remain reasonable compared to the surrounding area, due to the expansion of the city and new house building. There are a selection of good state and private schools in the immediate area. Peterborough is a city of approximately 200,000 inhabitants and continues to expand.    A new township, "Hampton", is almost complete and includes a school, shopping centre and medical centre.

In 2007, a number of city secondary schools merged to form two new Academies, the Thomas Deacon Academy and the Voyager School.  .In addition there are a number of independent schools in the area including Peterborough High School, Stamford Endowed Schools and Oundle School.

In the centre of Peterborough is the renowned Norman Cathedral together with a Guildhall and St.John's Church (see above picture).

Peterborough is also home to the Nene Valley Railway, which has featured in a number of major films and TV series. With the Nene Park is Ferry Meadows, a centre for a number of activities and sports, including sailing.

Each August Peterborough also hosts an annual Beer Festival, one of the largest in England.

Near to Peterborough are a number of picturesque villages and market towns.   It is a mixture of urban together with local rural and agricultural communities.
